In a statement on Tuesday the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has stressed in a meeting held in Nairobi, Kenya, the need to bring together all initiatives aimed at ending the conflict in the Sudan.
This way it argued the various initiatives would help reach a Sudanese owned solution to the 3-year old conflict, pitching the national army, the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Dr Workneh Gebeyehu, the Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development has pointed out that the ongoing conflict in the Sudan has far-reaching consequences for the country and the wider region, “underscoring the urgent need for stronger coordination among regional and international peace actors.”
In a statement published in his official account, Dr Workneh has revealed that at the 3rd Special Envoys/Representatives Forum held in Nairobi, Kenya, on Tuesday, alongside Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi, he has “ underscored the need for a shared strategic assessment, complementarity, and a clear division of labour among partners.”
The IGAD Executive Secretary has explained that together with the AU, UN, League of Arab States, EU, the Quartet, the Quintet, and other key partners, “we reaffirmed that Sudan’s path to peace must remain Sudanese-owned and Sudanese-led, supported by coordinated efforts towards lasting peace and stability.”
